Most learner’s permits last one or two years, but there is no nationwide expiration period. A state may issue a permit for 12 months, several years, or until a particular birthday. The expiration date printed on your permit is the date that controls.
Do not confuse expiration with the minimum holding period. A state might require you to hold a valid permit for six months before a road test even though the permit itself remains valid much longer. If you are still learning near the expiration date, deal with the renewal or reapplication first—an expired permit does not authorize practice driving.
Missouri-specific answer
How long a learner’s permit lasts in your state
A Missouri Class F instruction permit is valid for 12 months and can be renewed.
Check these dates before you plan a road test
Look at the permit itself, then compare its expiration date with the earliest date you are allowed to test. Leave time for any required driving hours, driver education, school forms, and appointment delays. A test appointment after the permit expires may not be usable.
- Permit expiration: the last date the credential authorizes supervised practice.
- Holding-period completion: the date you finish the state’s minimum time with the permit.
- Course or test deadlines: knowledge-test results, driver-education certificates, and other documents can have separate validity periods.
What to do if your permit is about to expire
Start with your state licensing agency 30 to 60 days before expiration. Ask whether you can renew the same permit or must apply for a new one, whether a knowledge or vision test is required again, and whether previously logged practice hours still count. Renewal rules differ: some states allow another term, some limit the number of renewals, and some make you restart after a long lapse.
If the permit has already expired, stop practice driving until you have a valid credential. A grace period for renewal does not automatically mean you may keep driving during that period. Bring the expired permit, identity and residency documents, any required parent or guardian, and payment method requested by the agency.
Keep the permit timeline in context
A learner’s permit generally authorizes supervised practice, not solo driving. If you are unsure what the credential allows, start with what a learner’s permit does. When you are approaching the next stage, review what changes when you move from a permit to a driver’s license.
