Can You Drive Alone With a Learner’s Permit?

Can you drive alone with a learner’s permit? Get the exact supervisor rule, age-18 effect, and consequences for all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.

Select your state for the complete answer that applies there. RouteOS researched the ordinary passenger-car learner or instruction permit in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The state panel gives the exact supervising-driver rule, explains what changes at adulthood, and identifies the licensing or enforcement consequence of driving alone.

This guide does not use one nationwide rule as a substitute for state law. Each state answer is based on that jurisdiction’s official motor-vehicle agency, driver manual, legislature, or code and shows the source and actual review date.

Wisconsin-specific answer

Can you drive alone with a learner’s permit?

No—Wisconsin’s ordinary passenger-car learner or instruction permit does not authorize solo driving. For a learner under 18, the supervisor must be a qualified instructor, a licensed parent, guardian, or spouse age 19 or older, or a licensed adult age 21 or older who has written authorization from the parent or guardian. The supervisor must have at least two years of licensed driving experience and sit beside the learner.

What age changes: At 18, Wisconsin’s sponsorship and teen driver-education requirements change, but the instruction permit remains supervised. The holder must pass the road test and receive the probationary or regular license before driving alone.

If you drive alone: A driver under 18 must hold the instruction permit for at least six months without a moving violation before the probationary license. A conviction from an unlawful solo trip restarts that six-month violation-free period and can also bring points or suspension.

What the state answer covers

  • The direct answer: whether the ordinary learner or instruction permit authorizes an unsupervised trip.
  • The supervising driver: the required age, license experience, relationship or approval rule, and seating position.
  • Turning 18: what changes in that state’s licensing path and what remains restricted.
  • The consequence: the state-specific citation, fine, point, suspension, permit cancellation, or licensing delay supported by the official source.
  • The scope: passenger-car permits only; motorcycle and commercial learner permits follow different rules.

A learner permit is not a provisional or hardship license

Read the exact name printed on the credential. A state may separately issue a provisional, intermediate, school, farm, work, hardship, or restricted license with limited solo privileges. That later or special credential is not an unwritten exception to an ordinary learner permit. The state answer above explains the ordinary permit; any separately issued credential must be evaluated under its own printed restrictions.

If you already drove alone

  • Do not repeat the trip while you still hold only the learner or instruction permit.
  • Arrange for the qualified supervising driver described in your state answer before the vehicle moves again.
  • Keep any citation or agency notice and meet every court, payment, hearing, or DMV deadline printed on it.
  • Recalculate the permit holding period if your state answer says a conviction, adjudication, suspension, or permit cancellation restarts or extends it.
  • Do not assume that turning 18, completing driver education, or becoming road-test eligible erases an existing citation or suspension.

Before the next practice drive

  • Carry the active permit and use the supervisor described for your state and age.
  • Check the credential itself for separate time, passenger, road, or corrective-lens restrictions.
  • Use a registered and insured vehicle that the owner has authorized you to drive.
  • Count only practice completed under the state’s lawful supervision rule.
  • Wait until the licensing agency actually issues the next credential before making a solo trip.
